Our Story

Epic Diving was born in 2010 from the shared passion of Vincent and Debra Canabal: a love of sharks and a commitment to their protection. Based in the Bahamas, we offer safe, up-close encounters with some of the ocean’s most iconic predators—from sleek reef sharks to awe-inspiring tiger sharks and elusive oceanic whitetips.

What started on the shores of Cat Island has grown into world-class expeditions that blend adventure, education, and conservation. Each dive is more than an adventure—it’s a chance to witness these incredible animals in their natural environment, forge a deeper connection with the ocean, and become part of their story.

Our team works behind the scenes to ensure every trip is safe, memorable, and educational. We welcome divers from around the world, helping them experience the magic of the Bahamas while fostering respect and understanding for sharks.

Our Mission

Sharks are essential to healthy oceans and deserve our protection. Through responsible shark tourism, we challenge misconceptions, replace fear with respect, and foster a deeper understanding of these remarkable animals.

At Epic Diving, we show sharks as they truly are—wild, powerful, and vital to the marine ecosystem. Up-close encounters give guests a chance to witness their beauty and grace firsthand, inspiring lasting connections and turning divers into advocates for shark conservation.

We support research, collaborate with conservation organizations, and share knowledge that helps protect the oceans. Every dive, story, and photo contributes to a growing global effort to safeguard these iconic predators.

Through adventure, education, and conservation, our mission is clear: to inspire respect, spark curiosity, and encourage action that protects the ocean’s most extraordinary creatures.

Our Promise

Safety, care, and exceptional service guide every expedition. With expert guides in the water and thorough orientation briefings, divers can explore confidently in the calm, crystal-clear waters of the Bahamas.

Meet the Team

Vincent Canabal, MD
Owner/Operator

Vincent Canabal is a board-certified Emergency Medicine Physician. When he’s not working in the ER during the diving off-season, he’s at the helm of Epic Diving, leading guests into the world’s most incredible shark encounters.

A lifelong waterman, Vincent holds a 100-ton Master’s License from the United States Coast Guard, a Class A Boat Master’s License in the Bahamas, and is a certified PADI Scuba Instructor. His expertise on (and under) the water ensures every expedition is run with the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and adventure.

Vincent’s passion for sharks began at just 14 years old, when he first slipped beneath the waves to dive and film these majestic animals. That first encounter sparked a lifelong journey, taking him to shark hotspots around the globe and inspiring his mission to promote conservation through unforgettable, in-water experiences.

As the owner and operator of Epic Diving, Vincent blends science, seamanship, and storytelling—crafting photography and videography expeditions that not only thrill but also transform perceptions of sharks. He believes that face-to-face encounters, paired with powerful imagery, can replace fear with respect, and awe with a deeper appreciation for these apex predators.

Debra Canabal, PhD
Owner/Operator

Debra Canabal earned her Ph.D. in Biomedical Science with a concentration in neuroscience from Rutgers University. A scientist at heart, her path shifted during graduate school when she went on her first shark dive in the Bay Islands of Honduras. That single dive sparked a lifelong passion and deep respect for these powerful yet misunderstood animals.

Motivated to protect sharks, Debra became Director of Development at the Shark Research Institute, advancing conservation through research and global awareness. In 2010, she founded Epic Diving, creating a platform where ecotourism connects people with sharks in their natural environment and inspires their protection.

Education and outreach remain central to her work. She frequently visits schools and community programs to share her knowledge and launched Epic Diving’s scholarship program, which awards graduating Bahamian high school seniors a full tuition scholarship to the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute in Nassau.

Debra believes conservation thrives where science, tourism, and education intersect. By giving people the chance to experience sharks up close, she works to replace fear with understanding and inspire the next generation to protect our oceans’ most iconic predators.
